Kanji Unearthed is a small site about where Japanese characters come from. We collect as little as we can. In short: no accounts, no ads, no tracking cookies, and we never sell or share your data.

Your game progress

Your streak, stats and answers in Build-a-Kanji are saved in your own browser (local storage). They are never sent to us. Clearing your browser data deletes them. Inside the Instagram app, the game runs in Instagram’s own browser, which keeps a separate copy.

If you join the email list

We store your email address with our email provider, Kit (ConvertKit), and use it only to send you the weekly kanji story. Every email has an unsubscribe link. You can also ask us to delete your address at any time: send a direct message to @kanji.unearthed on Instagram.

Counting visits

To know whether the puzzle is worth making, we count simple events: a puzzle was opened, finished, shared, or someone joined the email list, together with the puzzle number. These counts contain no cookie, no user ID and no IP address. We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies.

Hosting

The site is hosted on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical data such as IP addresses to deliver pages and stop attacks, under its own privacy policy.

Children

The game needs no personal data. If you are under 16, please ask a parent before joining the email list.

Changes and questions

If this page changes, the date at the top changes too. Questions: send a direct message to @kanji.unearthed on Instagram.
